📚❤️ Last week, intermediate and middle school students from across Buncombe County came together for a showdown- not on the field, but in the world of books!
The annual District Battle of the Books Competition put students’ reading, teamwork, and quick thinking to the test as they answered detailed questions about 20 different titles. This year’s competition was fierce, but in the end, three schools rose to the top:
🥉 Third Place: North Windy Ridge Intermediate
🥈 Second Place: Asheville Middle
🥇 First Place: Enka Middle – our district champions!
“Battle of the Books is like a team sport for reading,” said Lila Morel, district media and blended learning specialist. “Students train by immersing themselves in books, just as athletes hone their skills through practice. On competition day, teamwork is everything. Each player (reader) brings unique strengths, whether it’s recalling key details, analyzing themes, or making connections. Just like in sports, strategy, communication, and trust are essential. Win or lose, students walk away with perseverance, problem-solving skills, and a lifelong appreciation for reading, all while experiencing the thrill of friendly competition.
Students from A.C. Reynolds Middle, Asheville Middle, Cane Creek Middle, Enka Intermediate, Enka Middle, Erwin Middle, Koontz Intermediate, North Buncombe Middle, North Windy Ridge Intermediate, Owen Middle, and Valley Springs Middle participated in this year’s challenge. Beyond the thrill of competition, these students walked away with valuable skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration, all while discovering the magic of books.
Congratulations to all the participants, and a special shoutout to Enka Middle, who will now advance to the Regional Battle of the Books Competition on March 25 in Transylvania County. Best of luck to them as they continue their journey!
