Students at Erwin Middle school got to end the first week with a new tradition - the Back to School Bash. The sports field was alive with students running, kicking balls, playing tug-of-war, and making new friends. Up near the school building were $1 popsicles, water balloon toss, face painting, and the ever popular dunk-a-teacher, where students who got a softball into a net could dump a bucket of water on their favorite teacher.
“It’s important for our school to come together and have a day where the kids can just be kids,” said assistant principal Megan Morgan. “Our beginning teacher of the year last year, Ms. Mikayla Wright started this with an end of school field day, and we wanted to continue that into the new school year.”
“We want kids to feel like school is a fun place,” said Ms. Wright. “It’s about learning, and learning is important. But it’s also important to have time to have fun and socialize with friends.”
Ms. Wright couldn’t talk long - she had to be back in place for a winning student to properly dunk her with a bucket of water. She was a popular dunkee of the dunk-a-teacher station.
Several BCS schools have Back to School Bashes, which are a great way to create a sense of community and help kids socialize and blow off some of the steam from the summer. Buncombe County Schools are not only places for students to get a top quality education, but hubs of socialization and community. Through hands-on activities and events like Back to School Bashes and field days, students and teachers create strong bonds that propel them through the school year and beyond.
