Science Syllabus

Class of 2023!

Welcome Back Parents, Guardians, and 8th Graders!

Holy smokes, the summers fly by, don’t they?!?  My name is Kari Manley and I am happy to welcome you to OUR Science classroom.

In this syllabus, you will find some information about the supplies you will need, our curriculum, homework, what to do if you are absent, and how your grade will be comprised.  If you would like any further information, feel free to email me!

It is my job to not only make sure you have fun in class and that you learn, but that you are prepared for high school.  No one is going to hold your hand and make sure you are being responsible for the next 4 years, so I won’t either J.  That wouldn’t be fair to you!  I promise to work with you and meet you halfway, but you must put some effort into your education too!  Together, we are going to get you ready for your future and take PRIDE in ourselves, our environment, and our community every step of the way!

Homework:

**This is optional.  If you choose to do it, you may use it on weekly quizzes and receive an easy 100%.  If you choose not to do it, your quizzes will be closed-note and your grade will neither be helped or hindered.  However, a 100% can drastically increase your grade!

You will have Vocab Spiral words each week, provided Monday and due Friday.  This will cover all the terms for that week that will be on your quizzes/tests, and ultimately your EOG.  You will keep track of your vocabulary in your spiral, define them, and draw a picture each week.  It’s that simple!!! The only other work you will have at home would be a class assignment you didn't finish for the day, studying, a project, or an alternative/extra credit assignment.

“Extra Credit”:

You can’t have extra of something you never had, so “Extra” means you have already done all your work and would like more.  You are only able to do extra credit if you have completed all other assignments and want to go the extra mile, NOT if you are missing 5 things and want something to do instead.
With this said, you may earn extra credit by going above and beyond!  I will not only offer specific assignments – you may conduct your own science experiments at home and show me your findings, attend Homework Diners on Monday nights, or do Science NewsELA articles on your own time!

Curriculum Overview:

We will be investigating so many interesting subjects in 8th grade Science! You can access the standards more in-depth from the front page of this website.
Over the course of this year, we will talk about:

  • Matter and Energy
  • Earth History, Systems, Structures, and Processes
  • Chemistry
  • Biotechnology
  • Structures and Functions of Living Organisms
  • Ecosystems
  • Evolution and Genetics
  • Molecular Biology

Grading:
100-90% = A       89-80% = B      79-70% = C      69-60% = D

                    59-50% = F              1% = Missing

  • Well, if you genuinely tired but didn’t master an assignment, you will earn a 50%, even if you scored less than a 50%.
  • If you did not put effort into an assignment and turned in much less than your best, it will be recorded as a 25%.
  • Work that is over a week late will be a 1% in the gradebook.

Note: Tests and Quizzes can be retaken as many times as you's like within a week of their assigned date! I'll take your highest score!

Absences:

I completely understand that things come up – believe me!  If you are out of class for some reason, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to find out what you missed!  Check with your peers and the “Absent Box” for helpful information.  If you are absent on a lab day, you will be given an alternative assignment for the grade. That way we can make sure you still have a chance to learn the content.

  • þ Missing work because of an absence must be turned in within a week of your return to school.  I will not take it after that and any missing work will result in a 1% at that point.
  • þ If you simply have missing work, 15 points will be deducted for each day and it cannot be more than 2 days old.  I will not take it after that and any missing work will result in a 1% at that point.

I have read and agree to all the policies, information, etc. laid out in the 8th grade Science syllabus.
