Corbitt, Jennifer - 8th Grade Math

Family Photo

Hello Erwin Warriors!

I come from a proud family of teachers and have always known this was my dream job!  I graduated from a local high school, and then attended Appalachian State University.  After graduation in 2000, I married my college sweetheart.  I not only gained another family, but married into the Cubs fan club as well!  We have been blessed with two children, Anna and Ryan, and are happy to call Asheville home.

I began my career as an elementary teacher, and in 2009 I earned by National Board Certification in Early Adolescent Mathematics for ages 11-15 while teaching sixth grade math at Erwin Middle.  I successfully renewed in 2018, and am excited to be back to Erwin Middle!

Walt Disney once said, “Somehow I can’t believe that there are any heights that can’t be scaled by a man who knows the secrets of making dreams come true. This special secret, it seems to me, can be summarized in four C s. They are curiosity, confidence, courage, and constancy.”  I believe children need and prefer structure and consistency.  I do my best to have a routine students can count on, as well as a fairness to my expectations for all.  I believe everyone can learn math, and welcome multiple strategies, with justification.  In our classroom we will celebrate students who take risks and revel in those “Ah-ha” moments!

As a community we will make mistakes…and learn from them.  One way we will do that is through the way we will take assessments.  Students will be tested on small amounts of information at a time.  That assessment will take place on the computer and students will have an immediate grade.  The assessments will be created from a bank of questions, so students will not all have the same questions, but all questions will be on the same topic.  There will always be 8 questions, so the grades are based on that.  Please see the chart below.  If you see a blank in PowerSchool,  your child did not take the assessment and needs to complete it.  At the end of the nine weeks, the blank will be filled in with a 50.  If you ever have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out!

As partners in your child’s education we can make this the best year yet!
